Authors

The article describes the historical evolution of Accident & Emergency departments from 1960 to the present day before analysing the functions and objectives of Emergency Medicine within Italy’s National Health Service today. It continues with an examination of the figure of Emergency Doctors, their role and the quest for an identity that entails the acquisition of skills, institutional acknowledgment and the establishment of a School of Specialisation in Emergency Medicine.
