Prof. Aurelio Maggio

Prof. Aurelio Maggio has a degree in Medicine and Surgery 110 summa cum laude, at the University of Palermo and later the Specialization in Clinic and Laboratory Hematology at the University of Pavia. Actually he holds the position of Director of Department of Hematology for rare disease of blood and blood-forming organs, and Director of the Department of Hematology and Oncology at V. Cervello Hospital. He carried out clinical, laboratory and research activity coordinating team of doctors, nurses, laboratory technicians and biologists in the field of hematological diseases with particular regard to anemia. The Center of which he is Director, has been included in the European network of ERN for rare hematological diseases. Since 1982 he coordinates the Prevention Programme of Hemoglobinopathies in Sicily and is a member of the Regional Council for Thalassemia and Hemoglobinopathies at Department of the Sicilian Regional Health. He was President of the National Society for the Study of Thalassemia and Hemoglobinopathies and Professor at the School of Specialization in Clinical and Laboratory Haematology, at University of Palermo. He was a member of the Ministerial Committee of Experts for the controlled use of Deferiprone. He has also coordinated several clinical research projects and laboratory developing specific skills in the clinical methodology applied to the design and development of multi-center randomized clinical trials, as demonstrated by more than 150 his scientific publications. Furthermore he has acquired considerable experience in the organization of health networks. Currently participates in the conduct of a project funded by the European Union (Project DEEP - Deferiprone Evaluation in Pediatrics). He has collaborated with several foreign institutions Research Projects aimed to: in utero transplantation, gene therapy of hemoglobinopathies, regulation of globin genes, particularly in fetal hemoglobin activation. He is in the editorial board of the Anemia Journal.
